What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A practical guide

Search is shifting from links to answers. Here’s what AEO is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and the practical steps to make your expertise answer-ready.

For twenty years, search optimisation meant one thing: get a page to rank. Today, a growing share of questions are answered before anyone clicks — in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants, and AI-generated overviews. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you make sure your expertise is part of those answers.

AEO in one sentence

AEO is the practice of structuring accurate, expert content so that answer-driven search experiences can understand it, trust it, and use it to answer real questions.

How AEO differs from SEO

SEO is about ranking documents. AEO is about answering questions. The two overlap heavily — a slow, poorly structured site won’t do well at either — but AEO adds a sharper focus on intent, clarity, and structure.

  • SEO asks: which page should rank for this query?
  • AEO asks: what is the best answer to this question, and is it clearly ours?
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) asks: when an AI system summarises many sources, are we cited and described accurately?

The four foundations of answer-ready content

First, intent coverage. Collect the real questions your buyers ask — from search data, but also from sales calls and support tickets — and make sure each important question has a clear answer on your site.

Second, answer-first structure. Lead with a concise, direct answer, then add depth: definitions, steps, comparisons, examples. Use headings that mirror the question.

Third, entity clarity. Make it unambiguous who you are and what you offer: consistent naming, a clear About page, service pages that describe one thing well, and accurate structured data.

Fourth, citable credibility. Specific, accurate, well-sourced content — ideally with original insight — is what other sites reference and what AI systems are more comfortable using.

A simple AEO process

  • Build a question map across the buying journey
  • Audit how you and competitors appear in answer features today
  • Restructure strong pages to answer first; create pages for important gaps
  • Add and validate structured data (Organization, Service, FAQPage where FAQs are visible)
  • Monitor visibility for priority questions and refine

What AEO can’t do

No one can guarantee that an AI assistant will cite you, or that a featured snippet will stay yours. Anyone promising that is overselling. What AEO does is make your content a stronger, clearer, more trustworthy candidate — and give you a way to measure progress over time.

Where to start

Pick the ten questions that matter most to your buyers. Check whether your site answers each one clearly in the first two sentences of a relevant page. That exercise alone usually reveals the biggest opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

No. AEO builds on SEO. Technical health and authority still matter; AEO adds a focus on answering specific questions clearly.

No. Structured data helps search engines understand your content, but it doesn’t guarantee any particular display.
